Histamine intolerance is increasingly recognized as a significant challenge in metabolic health. It arises when histamine accumulates in the body due to impaired degradation by diamine oxidase (DAO). As a critical enzyme in histamine metabolism, DAO plays a vital role in ensuring that excess histamine from dietary sources is efficiently broken down before it enters the bloodstream.
DAO deficiency is one of the most common enzyme-related disorders globally, yet it remains underdiagnosed. Symptoms can vary widely, including migraines, digestive issues, chronic inflammation, fibromyalgia, and ADHD. Given the complexity of histamine intolerance, the demand for effective solutions is growing in the food supplement and FSMP (Food for Special Medical Purposes) industry.
adiDAO®, developed by ABbiotek Health, offers a scientifically validated approach to improving DAO activity and managing histamine metabolism. Unlike conventional antihistamines, which only block histamine receptors, adiDAO® actively enhances histamine degradation, addressing the root cause of intolerance. This article delves into DAO deficiency, the role of adiDAO®, and why it stands out in the industry.
DAO deficiency can be caused by many different factors, including genetics, chronic digestive conditions (such as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease), use of certain medications (such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - NSAIDs), or a diet rich in foods containing histamine. Common symptoms of DAO deficiency include:
Understanding the role of DAO in histamine metabolism is crucial for industries looking to develop effective therapeutic solutions.
ABbiotek Health (DR Healthcare) has been a leader in DAO research since 2007. The company collaborates with leading universities, research institutions, and industry experts to advance scientific understanding of DAO deficiency and histamine metabolism.
Over 100 clinical and scientific studies have been conducted on DAO, supporting its role in histamine degradation. These studies validate the efficacy of adiDAO® and highlight its potential as a key solution in the FSMP and food supplement sectors.

DAO supplementation improves symptoms of migraine and reduces consumption of anti-migraine medication: A 2018 study by Izquierdo-Casas J et al. showed 87% of migraine patients had reduced DAO activity. In a subsequent study, they found that DAO supplementation resulted in participants having fewer migraine attacks and reduced consumption of anti-migraine medication, Triptan. Chart 1 shows the percentage of patients who used Triptan before and after one month of treatment with a placebo (on the left) or DAO (on the right).
75% of fibromyalgia patients have a genetic DAO deficiency. DAO supplementation has proven effective in alleviating symptoms: Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic pain, fatigue, mood and sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and extreme sensitivity. Trials with fibromyalgia patients by Okutan G et al showed favorable changes in symptoms, following DAO supplementation, especially in fatigue, stiffness, and depression. (Chart 2)
adiDAO® offers two distinct enzyme sources:
Through continuous refinement in enzyme extraction and purification, adiDAO® offers higher enzymatic activity compared to competing products. This ensures that businesses can provide a highly effective solution for managing histamine intolerance.
adiDAO® is designed for versatile applications, making it suitable for different FSMP and supplement formulations.
One mU unit corresponds to the breakdown of 1 nmol of histamine per minute. In finished products, DAO activity typically reaches approximately 0.61 mU/dose (~30,000 HDU/dose), helping to ensure maximum effectiveness. adiDAO® is the ideal choice for businesses wanting to develop functional food products or FSMPs to support people with problems with histamine metabolism.
