The role of vitamin K2 in heart health

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) - large challenges to the society

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the Western world.

Excess calcium builds up in the vessel walls, causing stiffening of the walls and build-up of plaque in the arteries (Cardiovascular calcification).

Arterial constrictions in the body cause increased blood pressure, increased workload for the heart and may end in chronic heart failure. Constrictions of the coronary arteries cause reduced blood supply to the heart and may lead to coronary infarction.

Matrix Gla-Protein, MGP, a strong inhibitor of vessel calcification

One of the strongest inhibitors of vessel calcification is the vitamin K-dependent protein MGP.

Just like osteocalcin in bone, MGP is dependent on vitamin K2 for its function.

Vitamin K2 is necessary for the activation to take place and is crucial for the body’s ability to regulate calcium. Activated MGP binds calcium, preventing calcium deposits in arteries.

Vitamin K2- a key player for optimal cardiovascular health

Analysis of healthy artery tissue revealed that it contains 100 times more Vitamin K2 than unhealthy artery tissue and significantly less calcium. High levels of calcium cause calcification or hardening of arteries and blood vessels. It is one of the factors that cause aging of the body.

Research Rotterdam (2004) shows that a diet rich in Vitamin K2 has strong protective effects on heart health. A 10-year study of 4807 healthy baseline men and women over age 55 indicated that eating foods rich in natural Vitamin K2 (at least 32 mcg / day) resulted in a reduction in 50% arterial calcification, 50% reduction in cardiovascular risk, and 25% reduction of all causes of death.

In 2008, these findings were confirmed by another study of 16,000 women aged 49-70 years old at the start of the study and without cardiovascular disease. The study was carried out for 8 years. The researchers found that for every 10mcg of Vitamin K2 (MK-7, MK-8, and MK-9) consumed the risk of coronary heart disease was reduced by 9%.

However, the modern diet does not contain enough Vitamin K2 necessary, so according to experts' recommendation, MenaQ7 Vitamin K2 (MK-7) supplement is a must-do to ensure cardiovascular health.
